10 Tips for Playing Golf in the Summer Heat

tips for playing golf in the summer heatThe dog days of summer have arrived and, if you are as passionate about the sport as I am, you will be out on the golf course no matter how hot it gets!

Whether you are a beginner to the game or a die-hard amateur, you need to remember to bring the essentials with you so that the round doesn't become a harrowing experience.

Golf for Beginners has compiled are a few tips for playing golf in the summer heat. Review this checklist before your next round:

1. Hydrate! Freeze a bottle of water - it will usually last for the round.
2. Stash extra gloves for perspiration.
3. Sunscreen: How many times have you gotten beet red because you forgot to apply SPF?
Consumer Reports advises sun worshippers to apply sunscreen before bug spray, letting it absorb into the skin and then spray on a separate bug killer - try not to use a combination spray as you will need to reapply the sunscreen but not necessarily the bug spray.
4. Bug Spray: There is nothing worse than a swarming bunch of no-see-ums pinching at your skin as you are trying to make your 150-yard approach shot to the green. Look for a sunscreen that provides you with enough protection so that you are not constantly reapplying it.
5. Sunglasses: Blinding sunlight can have an impact on your eyes, causing blurriness - even if you take them off to look at the dimples on your golf ball, put them back on when walking or riding around in the golf cart.
6. Face towel - place a frozen, wet towel in a baggie and wipe down your face often. When the towel gets warm, refresh with ice at the turn.
7. Hat: Always bring along a hat with visor - the hat protects your skin and the visor protects your eyes.
8. Golf Clothing: Wear moisture-wicking materials which breathe and stay away from black and dark colors as they absorb heat (basic science - white and lighter colors reflect light and heat, dark colors absorb heat).
9. Find Shade: When you are waiting for your turn at the tee box, find a spot of shade to stand in - you will be amazed at how cool you are when approaching your shot.
10. Try for an early morning tee time. It's cooler during AM hours, so why not have an early morning cup of joe and enjoy the sunrise!

Top 5 Hottest Trends in Women's Golf Clothing for 2017

Golf is no longer a sport dominated by men. That’s something to be thankful of, as golf clothing has had a long sticky reputation over the years. As more and more women discover the pleasure of golf, the fashion of the sport is revolutionizing golf clothing on the green.

Everybody loves to look good whether they’re on the country club green or riding a golf cart on the publinks. Fashion has never been more important before to the game of golf. To know the latest trends, here are top 5 latest trends in golf clothing for 2017:

Bermuda Sands Golf Skort
1. Skort – They’ve got the fashion appeal of a skirt, but offers better coverage like shorts. Perfect for spring time weather when the golf game shines, skort combines fashion and functionality.

Comfortable and stylish skorts have an appeal that stands out on the green. Try blue leopard embroidery for a style that creates its own game. There are different colors of skirts to add color and dimension to any golf dresses.

Leopard print shorts2. The wilderness of the leopard:
Leopard colors are hot this year, and there is no limit to what you can get. Try the leopard putter cover to protect your club in style.

The blue leopard scarf is an ideal solution for tying the hair out of your eyes with a soft dimension. Leopard scrunches bring a sense of wild to any pony tail, perfect for getting some animal into your game and style.

Leopard headbands are perfect for keeping the sweat out of your eyes with solid fashion to add dimension. Leopard shorts? Well, let's just say that John Daly fans will just love it!

3. Reversible Vests - Golf games range across many different weather climate patterns, even in one afternoon. A vest is a great way to find the warmth you need on a windy day with a fashionable look that shows your best colors. Reversible vests are trendy this year, offering more options. You can adjust the vest to match whatever you’re sporting that day. It becomes two vests in one. Fashion is all about options. A reversible vest or abaya after a round gives you more diversity so you can find the ideal fashion ensemble to make the best of your game.

4. Short shots - This is one of the latest trends in golf clothing for 2017 – shorts are getting shorter (in spite of LPGA dress code issues)! While golf shorts are designed more around freedom of movement than fashion, when the sun finally arrives, maybe you might need to look for something little slimmer and shorter. Don’t go super short - choose a pair that offers both elegant fit and flexibility.

5. White chinos – This is another latest trend when the course is bone dry, and there is no risk of getting muddy cuffs. White Chinos are one of the most recent trends in golf clothing - in fact; you are probably got a pair tucked away in the back of your wardrobe.  Now is the time to remove them. They need to be bright white, not office white. Pair them with a navy top of the jacket.

Summary: Golf is your game. There are many trends since golf has become fashionable, and it's important to find the one that suits you. Choose the style that makes you look your best. You will feel better, and you’ll "up" your game in the process.

Bermuda Sands Apparel for Women - Fit for #Golf!

Golf apparel, once only designed for style, has blossomed into functional wear which works well both on and off the course. Fit, fashion, and comfort are just as important during an eighteen hole stretch as they are at the 19th while having a snack with your foursome. So, what makes certain golf apparel perennial favorites?

Although certain styles are naturally de rigeur, like polos, cardigans, and khakis, brands are reaching out to millennials with more trendy pieces sporting bolder colors, changes in collar design and added functionality such as cell phone and scorecard pockets.

Where a few fashion-forward items are meaningful to every wardrobe, comfort is probably the most important functional spec which determines what I wear for my round of golf. I usually reach for the same pieces over and over again and, when I add a new skort or shirt to my attire, it had better serve a purpose.

I recently added to my closet a golf shirt and skort from Bermuda Sands Women's Fall Collection, "Evelina" Women's polo and the "Vera" skort from the  Creston Peak Collection.

Black and white complement any season and the bold lavender definitely stands out against the changing Autumn scenery. The medallion pattern on the skort carries onto all of the available tops which means if it gets chilly, I can add a cover-up to the outfit!

Yes, I will be a fashion statement on the golf course come this fall but that is not why I will be excited to wear my new Bermuda Sands outfit.

The quality of the materials used is excellent. As I held both pieces, I couldn't help but notice the silky feel and weight of the fabric. I thought it would be heavy when I tried on the outfit but was impressed by its lightweight comfort.

The Greer line of golf apparel is 92% Polyester and 8% Spandex stretch jersey, which offers a great range of motion and should also help to keep me comfortable and dry, even when I am sweating out those ten-footers for par.

Bermuda Sands also offers a men's line of short and long sleeve shirts and outerwear.

I can't wait to take this outfit onto the golf course but, since it's new in my closet, it needs to air at the appropriate time and at a top-notch golf course...perhaps Grande Dunes...Pine Lakes? Or maybe TPC Myrtle Beach...

Bermuda Sands, an innovative golf apparel company, has been creating fine clothing for both men and women since 2009 and, since the quality of their clothing is first-rate, in my opinion, this company deserves a look.

Do you love shopping for golf apparel? If so, are you partial to polos...skorts? Feedback requested on our golf blog in the comments section and on Twitter @Golf4Beginners.

I may receive free services, items or payment from miscellaneous providers of golf-related merchandise. ❀ I promise that I will always deliver my honest opinion!

Is there a Secret to Getting Invited to The Masters?

Guest Golf Blog Written by Mary Roberts. See below for bio.

I swear I can spot a Masters Green Caddy hat miles away, and every time I do, I immediately envy that person and want to run up to them and ask, “How did you go to the Masters and not me?!”

Being invited to The Masters is something I cannot wait to cross off my bucket list!  Year after year, my husband and I have entered the lottery (through random selection process) to get tickets and, every year, we promise each other that we will be just as happy if we only get invited to the practice rounds… unfortunately, every year we come up empty handed and broken hearted.

Just a note - 2014 Masters Tickets are already sold out - according to Masters.com, "the ticket application process for the 2014 Masters Tournament has concluded. All tickets were sold in advance by random selection and no additional tickets are available." - Bah, humbug!

Playing golf is our Sunday ritual: it’s our time together to enjoy the weather, each other and a good round of golf.  One Sunday I finally got the nerve to run up to that lucky person I spotted on the golf course, this time sporting a Masters golf polo, and asked him just how did he do it...what was his secret to getting invited to the Masters?!

He chuckled and said, “I don’t know either, but if I find out I’ll let you know.”

As I stood confused, I looked around and noticed he also had a Masters golf bag, Masters putter cover and a Masters golf towel sitting beside him in the golf cart. He was totally decked out.

He noticed me checking out all of his Masters gear and said, “Oh! I guess I do know a secret that may help you!”  He told me about a website where you can buy Masters Merchandise, called MMO Golf, so I made a mental note and continued my game.

Once I got home, I ran to the computer and found the site. Sure enough they had everything I ever wanted and more from The Masters, from pin flags and memorabilia to golf clothing for both men and women.

I dug around the site for a while, loaded up my shopping cart with Masters ball markers, a Masters golf polo for me, a wind shirt for my husband and a couple of caddy hats for friends and family.  A couple of items that I really wanted, like the Ladies Pink Caddy hat and the Masters Golf bag were not available so I called the number listed on their site to find out a little about the company and how I could get these items.

The customer service lady on the phone explained to me how the website is a shopping service and goes to the tournament every year in Augusta, Georgia, selling the items online to people like me who cannot attend the tournament. They use their tickets to go in (watch the tournament, of course...who wouldn't?) and purchase Masters Merchandise straight from the Augusta National Pro Shop.

MMO Golf Inc. doesn't manufacture any merchandise and only buys directly from the Pro Shop and then makes items available to the public on their website. Pre-orders are taken in February; the site then acts as a personal shopper to get the Masters Merchandise requested.

I thanked her for providing this service for the “uninvited” golf enthusiast like myself and told her I would be calling back in February to surprise my husband with a Masters Golf Bag for his birthday.

You bet every year I will continue to enter the lottery for an invitation to The Masters, but at least in the meantime, I can wear my Masters Caddy hat proudly and have others envy me!

Want to Play Golf? Three Tips for Beginners

If you've dabbled in a few rounds of golf, or if you've never played but have friends, family or a partner who is an avid golfer, you might be seriously thinking about getting into the sport. And, there are plenty of reasons to try out this "sport that will last you a lifetime"...if you're truly interested.

Golf is a uniquely flexible sport – you can play a few holes or stretch out the fun over the whole day.

Golf can be a social experience with a group of friends, or a chance to get a few hours by yourself on the course trying to beat your best. It's a sport that can be enjoyed by young and old, men and women, in any level of competition. And finally, there's a certain inexpressible joy in experiencing the rolling countryside, the song of birds and the clunk of a neatly aimed putt.

Golf is not that hard to get into and to appreciate. Here are three tips to help anyone to get started:

1. Find a Golf Course:

Get Into Golf Map

There are nearly two thousand golf courses in England (with the number of golf courses worldwide in 2008 at over 35,000) and you're bound to know one in your area. If you're interested, you can find a taster session near you – many are free to try and you get equipment provided as well.

Once you think that golf is the sport for you, why not book a few lessons: there's no better way to discover the rules, etiquette and skills required to become a talented golfer than to have a qualified instructor show you the ropes. Depending on your preferences and comfort level, you can book a one-to-one session or learn as part of a group.

If there's not a conveniently-located course near you, or if you don't have the time initially to practice as often as you'd like, you can try visiting a pitch-and-putt or driving range to practice your skills. Super-twilight golf is also a fun way to play a few holes without having to struggle through a four-plus hour round.

2. Get The Equipment!

At some point, if you're even half-way serious about playing golf, you'll want to purchase your own set of clubs. This is a big undertaking, so don't rush into it! Ask your instructor for advice on the best clubs to suit you, book yourself in for a an in-depth club fitting, or, at the very least, see what the staff at your local golf store can do to help you find clubs which are forgiving and right for your game. You are allowed fourteen golf clubs in your bag but try to pick the ones that work best for you.

Spend according to your enthusiasm. If you've become a regular player, you'll just end up frustrated if you don't go for the best quality clubs you can afford – conversely, if you only get to go a few times a year, it won't hurt to save money on a second-hand pair of clubs if you don't want to stretch.

3. Dress to Impress!

Golf Clothing should blend fashion-forward style with comfort.

When you play your first few rounds, all you really need is something flexible and comfortable, but as you get more serious as a golfer it's important to pick out the right clothing. You can layer your clothing to ensure you're able to adapt to all conditions, stripping down to a shirt for warm weather or donning a waterproof jacket in more inclement conditions.

Choosing a few good pairs of golf trousers and shorts are essential too, combining protection from the elements, comfort throughout the course and unrestrained mobility through the swing. Plus, of course, for the fashion-conscious, golf clothes can be a whole new avenue of expression, with styles that change from year to year.

Rickie Fowler and Puma add Summer Sizzle to Golf Clothing

Rickie-Fowler_Puma_Golf-Clothing
When you watch Rickie Fowler playing in a professional golf tournament, what is the first thing you see? Most likely, aside from Rickie's boyish charm, you immediately notice his bright golf clothing from Puma Golf!

Hailed by some as the next generation of golf, former motocross racer Rick Yutaka Fowler was the number-one ranked amateur player in the world for much of the 2007-2008 season.

In addition to having four top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour so far in 2013, Rickie is one of the ambassadors for Puma Golf, a name synonymous with high performance and versatile sports and golf clothing.

There are other great, up-and-coming Tour players who sport the Puma label like recent tour winner Jonas Blixt but, when you think of edgy and memorable golf clothing, the spotlight shines brightly upon Rickie Fowler.

PGA.com has described Rickie's Masters PUMA outfits as "cool and colorful"; Golf.com has called Fowler "Flashy" and Fox Sports says Rickie has "golf chops" but is also known for his colorful style:

With a complete range of PUMA golf clothing available at Function18.com, it is easy for the amateur golfer to dress like Fowler, "bold yet classically sporty."

The Golf Spectrum Fitted Belt is a perfect example of how accessories can make the outfit.

Leather with the embossed Puma cat and finished with a solid, enamel filled and removable Puma cat buckle, you don't have to wear orange in order to get noticed (although this belt, of course, is also available in Oklahoma State orange!)

If you like a colorful and super lightweight golf shoe, Puma's new FAAS Lite Golf Shoe is comfortable and waterproof with an Ortholite sockliner which keeps air circulating around the foot.

After eighteen holes, you will probably feel like going another round!

Golfers usually play better when they look good and feel the part. Comfortable and stylish golf clothing will not only help you look better on the course, it will give you an appearance of success. Get off to a good start on your round and make your presence felt with Puma.

Why De Rigueur Tartan is Fashion Forward Golf Clothing for The Open Championship

Scots call the pattern Tartan and use it ceremoniously as a symbol of Scottish history and pride; Americans named it Plaid while taking on a lighter approach to this centuries old textile weave.

Both sides of the Pond do agree that, when it comes to golf, Tartan is a must-have fashion statement for players at The Open Championship.

From the ever spiffy Ian Poulter who has themed his golf clothing and his brand, IJP Design, around the tartan pattern to European Team Captain Paul McGinley who has graciously added his personal touch to a specially-made model to commemorate the 2014 Ryder Cup, tartan has made its way from a Gaelic lineage to a cultural phenomenon.

You might even spot Tiger Woods wearing the bold pattern on the golf course one day as Nike has recently registered its own Tartan "Clan Colors" in May at the BMW PGA Championship

The Nike Golf clothing range of tartan fashion includes everything from the expected Nike Golf shorts and pants to Nike Tartan Golf Bags!

Tiger Woods plaid
Too casual for Tiger Woods on the Golf Course but okay at the NBA Finals

With The Open Championship announcing "Thursday is Tartan day", the majority of players will be dressed in the Tartan pant.

This Nike Golf Plaid Pant in Squadron Blue is a good example how a player can not only look good on the golf course but feel comfortable during the entire round. A lightweight, Dri-Fit fabric combined with an understated design provides function and fashion wow:

Performance Golf Clothing that Keeps You Dry and Concentrating on Your Game!

Spring weather can be very fickle for golfers who play in the rain; hence golf clothing must be functional and, yes, fashionable. Designed by golfers for golfers, Galvin Green waterproofs found at Function18.com can take care of the elements allowing you to concentrate on your game.

Players are always looking for that extra performance tech "edge", whether it's in the golf clubs or training equipment, so why not utilize clothing to your advantage?

Golf clothing now has to be functional, "providing exceptional comfort, freedom of movement and protection from the elements." GORE-TEX highly breathable and waterproof Tech Fabric with stretch, tabs with easy touch and close fasteners, front and chest pockets with water-repellant zippers and even extra-abrasion resistant material if you carry your golf bag helps to turn golf clothing into necessary equipment during your round.

Every year I have the opportunity to play Bethpage Black Golf Course and every year, like clockwork, it pours for the entire 18 holes...and I am unprepared. This year, according to the weather forecast, is no exception.

I wish I would have seen the numerous accolades given to the Galvin Green line of golf clothing before I opted out this year. Today's Golfer, in their January 2012 edition, said Galvin Green was the “Best Waterproof Brand and Best Apparel Brand of the Year" with National Club Golfer (NCG) giving Galvin Green two thumbs up as "The Ultimate All-Purpose Suit."

Galvin_Green_Ladies_Golf_Clothing

The "Alice" (above) in the Ladies Collection is waterproof and highly breathable and the "Beyonce" shell layer is a lightweight, windproof outer garment with temperature regulation. Warm, cool and base layers will keep your body comfortable during that all-important golf tournament.

Here are a few pieces I picked out from the men's line:

Galvin Green Acton GORE-TEX® Golf Jacket

Mens Galvin Green Acton GORE-TEX® Golf Jacket. A waterproof, full zip golf jacket in GORE-TEX® Paclite® stretch fabric. Extremely hard wearing and long lasting, easy to wash and maintain.

Mens Galvin Green Waterproof Golf Trousers

Mens Galvin Green August GORE-TEX® Paclite® Waterproof Golf Trousers. Waterproof golf trousers constructed from GORE-TEX® Paclite® Technology fabric, an ultralight fabric allows maximum breathability by releasing excess heat and moisture, whilst keeping external elements at bay.

Check out the entire Galvin Green Golf Collection at Function18.com as well as the Masters Collection.

Tiger Woods Shows Fashion Forward Golf Style from Torrey Pines to the Masters

Did you happen to notice that Tiger Woods was not wearing red when he began his fourth round at Torrey Pines? If so, you are not alone. Golf Channel, fans and even Tiger commented on the fact that his signature red golf shirt would be worn during the last day of the event.

Why is Tiger Woods' golf clothing so important? Who would have ever thought that golf clothing could be fashion forward? A few years ago, golf clothing consisted of plaid pants and mismatched shirts. With Tiger Woods and the young guns entering the sport, all this has changed.

Aside from the red, Tiger Woods has become a fashion statement in the world of golf and fans are intrigued by everything Woods; his golf equipment, clothing style, shoes and accessories make Tiger Woods a walking GQ model for golf and for the fashion industry.

To be sure, Tiger Woods' win number seventy-five at Torrey Pines is significant; he is second in overall wins to only the great Sam Snead and this win this could very well be the return of a 'raring-to-go' Tiger 2.0, ready to break records again and renew the faith of his fans.

With the 2013 Masters Tournament comes much speculation as to who will win at Augusta (yes, it's starting now!) and, even though we don't have odds (Tiger as favorite?), at least we will have the inside scoop as to what Tiger Woods will be wearing each day of the event.

Owner of OnlyGolfApparel.com, Doug Janchik, gave Golf for Beginners the 'heads-up' on Tiger Woods' Masters Collection and yes, you too can look GQ like Woods!

Jim Furyk may not sweat the Ryder Cup thanks to his new fashion line

I met up with Jim Furyk at a photo shoot for the launch of the golf clothing collection from New York clothier Hawke and Co., and received an education on the differences between cotton and moisture-wicking polyester. I also learned how this upscale company's products distinguish themselves from typical "off the rack" golf apparel right down to the subleties of the hawk symbolically stitched into every shirt and the recurrent colors of brown and orange which help golfers distinguish this clothing from the average lineup.

Furyk, who recently signed a long term sponsorship deal with the contemporary outerwear and sportswear maker, gave me his preferences on the performance-oriented collection.

Heat exhaustion before Hawke and Co.?

We also had a chance to talk about the upcoming Ryder Cup as well as whom Furyk would choose as his compadres if he was captain instead of Azinger. Tiger Woods came up in conversation as Azinger mentioned early on that Team USA were considered "underdogs" without the world's number-one in the mix. Considering the Americans have lost the past three Ryder Cup competitions, Tiger Woods' absence just might spur on a sense of unity among the beleaguered Americans.

Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia's names were also tossed around because of their stellar performance at the 2004 Ryder Cup where between the two of them, they scored an amazing 8.5 points!

Furyk's practice schedule was also discussed, where he's tuning up and golf tips were offered up for all of the amateurs out there.

For golf tips from one of the best golf instructors in the world, check out our recent interview with Tiger Woods coach, Hank Haney!

Outdoor apparel that's great for golf and tips for pace of play (and other reminders)

"The problem is up ahead about two or three groups," is the usual canned reply from the golf course ranger as our foursome is eagerly waiting to tee off. Patience is supposed to be a virtue but completing a round in over five hours is just ridiculous!

We all know that the publinks are generally known for slow play and other etiquette faux pas so Barry and I, with help from the National Golf Foundation, have made it a point this week to assist both newer golfers and those duffers who have forgotten the basic niceties of the game.

"Baby, it's hot outside!" With the 'dog days' of summer in full swing, golf apparel has to wick moisture while keeping the body cool as well as feel featherweight as you swing your golf club. Royal Robbins has taken outdoor wear to the extreme, incorporating UPF40 into their clothing as well as adding ventilation to assure a gentle breeze at your back. Climbing pioneers Royal and Liz founded this company over thirty years ago "to enhance the lives of their customers and make the world a better place through comfortable, rugged clothing that fits well and looks great." In addition to garments keeping you cool and dry, remember to drink plenty of water, find shade where ever you can and make sure to use sunscreen!

Do you really want to feel like this during a round of golf?

Finally, be sure to check out my upcoming interviews with both Hank Haney and Jim Furyk. Fans will appreciate the great golf tips and Jim Furyk will even give us some of his strategy for defeating Harrington and Garcia for the coveted Ryder Cup!
