How Proper Strength Training Can Improve Your Golf Game

Golf is a dynamic sport that engages muscles throughout the body. From the external obliques to the muscles located in your forearm, golf requires coordination and strength. Although strength is a crucial part of improving your golf game, many people still believe that they can succeed by just practicing - as important as it is to temper the mind, it is also important to consider proper strength training if you are serious about scoring well.

Practicing with a purpose is extremely important - you expand your ability to play well when you incorporate strength training into your weekly regimen.

In this guest post by Brian from Home Gym Strength, Golf for Beginners helps you realize the benefits of strength training in your overall golf game. In addition, Brian will explain some of the best exercises that golfers should incorporate into their routine.

Proper Golf Strength Training

Benefit 1 of Strength Training for Golf: Increased Mobility

A proper golf swing requires a wide range of motion. In order to move your body fluidly, you must have flexibility and mobility. Two important parts of any strength training regimen are stretching and engaging in functional exercises. Stretching allows your body to become more flexible. When you increase flexibility, you will likely be able to increase the power and length of your backswing. In addition to increased power, mobility allows you to change the mechanics of your swing. When you have enhanced mobility, you are not limited to one type of swing.

Benefit 2 of Strength Training for Golf: Improved Coordination

When you engage in strength training, your muscles learn to work cohesively. Through training, muscles are activated and begin to work efficiently. When your muscles are engaged, they are likely going to work together in unison, enhancing strength and coordination.

You never work just one individual muscle, every movement is composed of fibers from many different muscles. In order to maintain coordination, all muscles need to learn how to work together. In golf, it is crucial that you have good hand-eye coordination. As you activate the muscles in your body through your swing, the muscles in your brain direct your body where to point, shoot, and hit the ball. This coordination is potentially the most important aspect of golf. By strength training, your body will fall into a rhythm of coordination.

Improved Golf Coordination

Benefit 3: A More Powerful Golf Swing

When you have more strength in your arms, legs, and core, you will be able to drive the ball further down the field. Not only must you have balance and coordination, you also must have the power to send the ball flying across the course.

Many people believe that if they can strengthen their forearms then they will thrive in their golf game. If you want more power in your swing, you must strengthen your abdominal and leg muscles. Your legs are used to support your body as you move forward into your swing. The muscles in your core are needed to position your torso correctly so that your ball can reach the green. Powerful swings start with a robust, full-body strengthening regimen.

Best Strength Training Exercises for Golfers

There are many great strength training exercises that golfers can complete to take their game to the next level. The three categories of muscles that are crucial for golfers are:

  • Abdominals and Obliques

  • Upper Body - Forearm, Shoulders, Upper Back

  • Hamstrings and Quadriceps

Many people do not recognize that golf is a sport that requires full-body strength. There are exercises in each muscle group that will help you improve your game today.

Abdominals and Obliques - Core Exercises for Golfers

It is important to find exercises that work the entirety of your core. A strong core will stabilize your body as you swing the golf club. Some of the best core exercises for golfers include:

  • Side Plank

  • Russian Twist

  • Glute Bridges

By engaging in these exercises, you will activate muscles throughout your entire core.

Upper Body Strength

Your upper body plays a huge role in the power of your golf swing. As these muscles strengthen, they help to reduce any tension being held in the lower back. Some of the most effective upper body exercises for golfers include:

  • Push-ups

  • Bench Presses

  • Preacher Curls

When you work your upper body, it is important to engage the muscles in both your shoulders and your back. For golfers, it is important to complete exercises that increase the strength of their forearms.

Upper Body Strength Training - Pushups for Golf

Hamstrings and Quadriceps - Leg Exercises

Your leg muscles help you to complete a controlled, strong golf swing. By working the muscles in your legs, you are more likely to keep your body in the correct position for the entirety of your swing. The following leg exercises are effective for golfers:

  • Single Leg Deadlifts

  • Back Squats

  • Reverse Lunges

These exercises fire up your hamstrings and quadriceps. By focusing on these muscle groups, you will see improved posture and power in your golf game.

Conclusion

Strength training is one of the most underrated components of an improved golf game. As people gain strength and coordination, they are likely to see more power in their swing. Strength training routines should include exercises that work muscles throughout the core, legs, and upper body. Do not be worried if you do not have a gym to go to during COVID or when you are out of your daily grind - the majority of these exercises can be done in the comfort of your home. By engaging the muscle groups throughout your body, you can take your golf game to the next level.

Swing Thoughts for the #Golf Course from Tiger Woods, DJ and Garcia

Every golfer, when standing at the first tee, has something on his or her mind while setting up for that first shot; keep your head down, stare at a spot on the golf ball, hit the middle of their fairway. On every shot thereafter, thoughts about the ensuing round set the stage for either a positive or negative experience.

Which golf swing thoughts are useful and which should you immediately discard?

Imagery creates reality on the golf course, so, if you have negative thoughts, chances are they will translate into negative actions. The Wedge Guy, among others in the business, note that golfers should only think of a single, positive swing thought at each meeting with the golf ball instead of creating "a running dialog through their head about all the things they are trying to remember to do . . . or not do."

That being said, Golf for Beginners has compiled several swing thoughts and golf tips used by top professional golfers to try on the golf course.

1. Sergio Garcia - TEMPO OVER SPEED - "When you make practice swings on the tee, think 'tempo' first. Notice that I never make them at full speed. I'll make a nice, controlled move back and through. I'm not practicing for power, I'm practicing for balance."

2. TIGER WOODS - VISUALIZE YOUR SHOT - Picture the golf ball going into the cup...yes, it's that simple. Some of the greatest athletes in the world (Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretsky and Woods) use creative visualization to gain control over the 90 percent mental-10 percent physical...that is, "using one’s imagination to visualize specific behaviors or events occurring in one’s life."

3. FOCUS ON STRIKING THE GOLF BALL - "In a survey of twenty-four PGA Tour players, eighteen said they didn’t think about anything at all during their swing. Those that did have a swing thought said it was to focus on a spot a few inches in front of the ball, to encourage swinging through, instead of hitting at the ball OR focusing on hitting the inside of the ball. NONE of them said they had ANY technical thoughts about their swing."

4. Dustin Johnson - CREATE A GOOD STANCE AND SET-UP- While DJ says he doesn't think of golf swing thoughts during a professional round, out on the driving range he works on creating good posture for his drive - pushing his hips back with a good bend at the knees.

5. ADAM SCOTT - One swing thought at a time!

What Can You Add to This Thanksgiving #Golf List?

Did you ever notice how many times you give thanks during a round of golf?

Stewart Cink_British-Open
Stewart Cink-British Open
From amateur players right up through the ranks of the PGA Tour, the golf g-ds are summoned at least once during a round for something miraculous to happen. Here is a short list of why we give thanks before, after, or during, a round of golf.

Feel free to add to this list:

Hitting a decent drive at the first tee - Probably the first time during a round of golf where you might look heavenward and pray for a great result.

A Member's Bounce - Ever hear the golf ball thunk against a tree and wonder where it might land?

I don't have to beg my spouse to play golf - thinking about Everybody Loves Raymond and all of the other spouses who need prior approval, I am happy to report that my husband loves the game at least as much as I do - no bribery needed.

Any birdie - par on a hole is great but a birdie is better...

An accurate GPS - Important for times when you can't find the 150-yard marker and start to feel lost on the golf course, having a golf caddy in the palm of your hand during a friendly round helps not only you but the rest of your foursome have a great time.

Great weather day - You try and plan for spring temperatures but Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate.

The Miracle Shot - Dropping a thirty-foot putt that breaks twice on golf course greens that register fourteen on the Stimpmeter (thinking Oakmont?)

Why do you give thanks? Let Golf for Beginners know on Twitter @Golf4Beginners and on our Facebook page.

Could YOU Play 100 Holes of #Golf In One Day?

This Golf for Beginners blog not only provides readers with reviews of new equipment and training aids, travel updates and opinionated arguments, but we also are very interested in people making a difference in their golf communities through charitable means.

With that said, please read the following blog written by Neil Johnston and, if you can, help him to support Misericordia through his Hundred Hole Hike , which "offers a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged."
***************
Guest Blog Written by Neil Johnston:
The Hundred Hole Hike (HHH) is a national-network of golf marathons where participants plan to walk 100 or more holes of golf in one day in order to raise money for various worthwhile charitable causes. The Hundred Hole Hike includes events at some of the top golf courses in the country, including many courses listed in the Top 100 by the various golf publications. In its inaugural year, the HHH raised $270,000 for a wide range of charities.
100 golf holes? 1 day? No mulligans?
Among those who have seen me play golf, the feedback is unanimous: Optimistic. Impossible. Ridiculous. Dude, lose some weight.
While caddying for a friend in last year’s inaugural Hundred Hole Hike, I watched a handful of similarly skilled (and in some cases, unskilled) hikers overcome physical and mental challenges to complete 100 holes. And I thought…hey I could do that. No, I should do that.
I live in the West Rogers Park area of Chicago within a lob wedge of Misericordia’s main campus. Misericordia supports individuals in Chicago with developmental disabilities by maximizing their level of independence and self-determination. Put simply, Misericordia believes that people with developmental disabilities not only have a right to life, but to one worth living. Currently, Misericordia supports more than 600 children and adults in Chicago, from all backgrounds, with developmental disabilities.
Misericordia makes my neighborhood a better place. Hacking my way around 100 holes seems like the least I can do to thank them. As a slightly overweight, 12 handicapper, it’s going to take a lot of help to complete the hike! Please consider supporting my hike and one of Chicago’s most worthy charities, using the following link:
All Golf4Beginners on Twitter readers who make a $25 pledge will receive a signed, unwashed sock of mine from the Hundred Hole Hike....just mention that you saw my blog. This is truly a one of a kind souvenir. Alternatively, if you would prefer a hearty thank you and a tax receipt, then that can also be arranged.

Your comments are welcome on this blog, on Twitter @Golf4Beginners and Facebook...or wherever you happento see Golf for Beginners!

Links Between #Golf and Skin Cancer-Which Tour Players Had It?

After receiving a golf press release about "Melanoma May" I realized that the probability of skin cancer during this season merited another blog which will probably sound more like a public service announcement!

Here are the latest stats about skin cancer and the necessity of athletes, especially golfers, using a serious, water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen.

ACCORDING TO RECENT STUDIES from SkinCancer.org:

·         65% of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

·         Men over age 40 have the highest annual exposure to UV radiation.

·         The majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are white men over age 50.

·         Melanoma is one of only three cancers with an increasing mortality rate for men.

WHY ARE GOLFERS AT A HIGHER RISK?

·         Getting four to six hours of sun exposure from a round of golf
·         Not wearing or reapplying sunscreen
·         Teeing off mid-morning when the sun’s rays are at their strongest
·         Having little or no shade if you stay on the fairways

GOLFERS WHO HAVE SURVIVED SKIN CANCER:

·         Fred Couples, a former golf world number one and US Masters winner, has had numerous cancerous lesions removed from his hands
·         Texan PGA player, Tom Kite
·         US Open winner, Andy North
·         English golfer, Brian Davis
Other famous people who have had a brush with skin cancer include Senator John McCain, former President Ronald Reagan, Ewan McGregor and Bob Marley.

To help prevent skin cancer, performance golf clothing is not enough! Doctors recommend applying a generous amount of water-resistant, broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all exposed areas thirty minutes before heading outside to play any sport. Look for a sports sunscreen formula that is designed to stay put if you sweat and won’t run into the eyes and sting, like the SkinCeuticals. No, I have not tried this particular sunscreen so I cannot recommend it personally. If my readers have tried it, I would appreciate your comments below.

SkinCeuticals Sport UV Defense SPF 50

Bottom line is to protect yourself.
Have a safe, healthy and happy Memorial Day weekend.

#Golf PSA for Skin Cancer Awareness Month...this means YOU!

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month and, for golfers in particular who spend over four hours in the sun during a round, this public service announcement could save lives!

Did you know:

  • More than two million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year
  • This includes men and women who hit the links without appropriate protection from the sun – from not using enough sunscreen to not wearing protective clothing.
  • According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the good news is skin cancer is easily preventable and – when detected early – has a high cure rate.

Check out this short PSA:

SpotSkinCancer.org, which just launched this week, has everything you need to know about skin cancer, locations for free screenings, educational material and local dermatologist in each market.

The dangers of engaging in outdoor activities like golf or hiking without appropriate protection- sunscreen, hats, could kill you. Be careful out there so you can attend all the demo days in your area!
